Colega:

Dear Madam / Dear Sir,

Subject: Academic Masquerade

My alma mater is at the hands of a gang, it might be called a clique or a
mafia, but no matter which, I mean a group who hold the power of our
school, and use it for their own benefit. I surmise that the seed was
planted in the nineties during the Menem administration. At present
democracy in our school is a travesty for they have perfected the scheme to
win the elections. When election time comes they pretend a change with no
change.

I reentered FCEyN /UBA in 1995. Having a practical background I found the
academic policy not to my liking. They had driven the "publish or perish"
doctrine to mockery. The professor’s performance is measured by the number
of papers, the content of which having no bearing. Academics are forced to
maximize the number of published papers, and the school has become a
bullshit producing engine.

Consider Prof George Smiley who wrote 154 papers in a 14 years stretch,
about one paper per month. I happen to know the case because I contested
with him and was wiped out by a landslide of his papers. Professors are
expected to ask for funds, the chairman of the math department submitted a
request for u$s 200.000 to renew lab equipments, which lab for Christ's
sake? I know this case because I was a member of the math faculty. There
are those who boasts of scientific achievements by faking a project,
submitting a bogus grant proposal, publishing bullshit papers, going on
vacation to attend academic meetings in the States or Europe, you name it.
I know of all these cases because I started an inquiry on corruption inside
the beast.

In fact I reacted to the academic masquerade by publishing satirical notes,
and then was manipulated by a task force who gave me a full mobbing
treatment. Then they aborted my contract to get rid of me. I appealed to
the dean, and the honorable capo dismissed the case by a parody of academic
judgmental rules.

My effort to find support from my colleagues was futile, they kept their
mouth shut - they cannot care less as long as they get the end-of-month
salary. Mind you, this is the normal attitude of my fellow countrymen,
since they are familiar with and resigned to domestic political corruption.
Indeed, I am witness to general Peron’s administration, and all the
intermediate steps, up to current Mrs Cristina Kirchner.

Very truly
yours,

Fabio Vicentini
