================================================================
We are seeking talented people motivated to take part in a large R&D
project involving a multidisciplinary team in 13 institutions spread
across Europe and Brazil.
The two-year project entitled “EU‐Brazil Cloud infrastructure Connecting
Federated Resources for Scientific Advancement” (EUBrazilCC,
http://www.eubrazilcloudconnect.eu) is funded by the European Commission
and CNPq/Brazil, United Kingdom
The main goals of the project are:
• The creation of a federated e-infrastructure for research using a
user-centric approach.
• The adaptation of existing applications to tackle new scenarios
emerging from the cooperation between Europe and Brazil; use cases are
relevant for both continents and address topics with high social impact
and innovation.
• Leverage scientific gateways and frameworks to address not only the
requirements from the 3 use cases but a potentially much larger user
community as well as tools that have already been demonstrated as
suitable for large-scale computing.
The positions are opened for the team based at the Federal University of
Campina Grande (UFCG). This team will work at the Distributed Systems
Lab (LSD) under the supervision of Prof. Francisco Brasileiro (see
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/pers/hd/b/Brasileiro:
Francisco_Vilar for a list of most relevant publications).
The monthly remuneration for the open positions ranges from R$3.000,00
to R$5.000,00, depending on the experience of the applicants.
Considering the average cost of living in Brazil in general (see
http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Brazil
for a rough idea), and Campina Grande in particular (see
http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Brazil&city=Campina+Grande for a rough idea), these are competitive salaries.
We are seeking for a range of different candidates, from junior
researchers (with completed MSc or PhD) to experienced software
engineers (at least 2 years of experience after been awarded an
undergraduate degree).
The following requirements apply:
• Fluency in English (or fluency in Portuguese and good knowledge of
English);
• Knowledgeable in the area of distributed systems (desirable experience
in cloud computing);
• Experience in teamwork;
• Availability to relocate to Campina Grande;
• Availability for short trips to attend project meetings and work
missions in Rio de Janeiro, Petropolis, Campinas and Europe.
The main activities of the UFCG team are related with the development of
a cloud middleware that will allow the federation of private cloud
computing infrastructures, following a bartering model.
The work will be inspired in the experience that LSD/UFCG has gained in
the design and implementation of the OurGrid middleware
(http://www.ourgrid.org/), and the operation of the OurGrid Community
(http://status.ourgrid.org/). New mechanisms will need to be designed
and implemented to address the opportunities and challenges that a cloud
setting brings.
The positions are opened from February 1st 2014 for an up to two-year
contract.
Applications should be sent to opportunities en lsd.ufcg.edu.br by December
31st.
Please, include in your application the following items:
• A short introduction letter (up to one page) that states your
motivation to apply and main interests, relating them to your previous
experience;
• Resumé/CV;
• Academic transcript;
• When you will be available to move to Campina Grande;
• The contact details for a reference (e.g., previous employer, supervisor).
The Distributed Systems Lab is located in a new building with 550 sqm
and modern facilities providing an enjoyable working place. A number of
projects are currently being executed by approximately 50 people,
including 5 faculty members of UFCG’s Computer Science Department,
around 30 graduate and undergraduate students, 10 associated
researchers, an infrastructure support team, as well as support for
administration matters. Other past projects related to
the EUBrazilCC project include EELA-2, GISELA
(http://www.gisela-grid.eu/), EUBrazilOpenBio
(http://www.eubrazilopenbio.eu), and the JiT Clouds project
(http://jitclouds.lsd.ufcg.edu.br/).
Campina Grande (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campina_Grande) is the
second largest city in the state of Paraiba, with approximately 400
thousand inhabitants, and is located 120 km from the coast. Its
location, together with an altitude of 600 meters, provides a stable and
pleasant temperature all year around (with an average temperature
ranging from 18, in winter, to 30 degrees Celsius in summer). Campina
Grande is internationally known as being a technology oasis
and has (as of 2011) the highest density of PhDs per inhabitant in Brazil.
