Título de la charla:
The relevance of the ecotoxicology bioassays and biosensors
for water pollution assessment

Resumen
The amount and the type of chemical substances released into the aquatic
environment by industry, agriculture or urban activities are more and more
increasing. The discharges of these effluents in water may lead to risks
for local aquatic organisms. It is thus necessary to detect these
contaminants before they cause irreversible damages. Different studies
carried out in this purpose by the LEHNA (Laboratoire des Ecosystèmes
Naturels et Anthropisés) of Lyon University (France) will be presented.
Ecotoxicology assays have been developed for describing impact of chemical
stressors on a large panel of aquatic organisms (microorganisms,
invertebrates, fishes). The integrated effects of xenobiotic on organisms
metabolism were also studied, taking into account the complexity of the
field.
These works led to the identification of pertinent biomarkers for
detecting environmental disturbances. However it must be kept in mind that
the choice of the assessment methods is depending on the composition and
complexity of the effluents.
The study of biosensors intended for in situ control of environmental
quality is in progress. These tools can respond to the on-line monitoring
requirement, as they can provide fast, sensitive and cost-effective
measurements. A panel of biosensors tested in our previous works will be
discussed.
