Resumen
Energetic nitrogen insertion into austenitic fcc phases leads to a multitude
of different and interacting processes with resulting layers often
characterised by high hardness and high wear resistance. A complex behaviour
involving metastable phase formation and decay, lattice expansion and stress
depending on very specific processing parameters including ion flux,
momentum transfer, time and temperature is observed.
Ex-situ investigations, which can be very sophisticated nowadays, lack the
exact time evolution while additional annealing processes may occur during
cooling phases. In-situ experiments can lead to a multitude of information
which can be used to reassess current models. Several examples will be given
during this presentation for the formation of expanded austenite in
stainless steel and CoCr alloys.
Ø The information from the substrate reflexes can be used to directly
assess time dependent diffusion processes, which may depend on temperature,
voltage or current density.
Ø Deviations can be rapidly identified for observing the decay into CrN.
Ø Deconvolution of the depth integrated information should allow
information on lattice expansion and stress development
