Galactic magnetic fields: how they grow, saturate and dissipate
El próximo jueves 10 de diciembre a las 14 hs

NORDITA, Suecia
The galactic dynamo is believed to be powered by supernova-driven
turbulence. This type of forcing does not directly produce vorticity.
The aim of this work is to assess whether vorticity is actually
important for the dynamo. We review how galactic magnetic fields can
grow with alpha effect and we show some of the problems that could
arise in doing simulations of such a field. Then we briefly talk about
magnetic helicity and how this can control the evolution of magnetic
structures. In the end we get closer to galactic magnetic fields and
relate their existence to the presence of vorticity in the turbulence
of the galactic medium.
