Laboratory Postdoctoral Position at NASA Ames Research Center
Opportunities exist for a NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) Fellowship in
Laboratory Astrophysics in the Space Science Division at NASA-Ames Research
Center in Mountain View, California. The position is for 2 years (one year
renewable). Candidates with a strong background in physics and/or chemistry
and motivated in working on astrophysical problems are invited to apply.
Two main lines of research are pursued in the laboratory: Astrophysics &
Astrochemistry (Interstellar carbon molecules) and Planetary sciences
(Titan's atmosphere).
The research projects involve the study of carbon molecules, ions and
clusters under simulated planetary and/or interstellar conditions. Research
will examine the spectroscopy of aromatic hydrocarbons and carbon clusters
generated in a pulsed discharge nozzle. In particular, this project will
examine the electronic spectroscopy and mass spectrometry of Polycyclic
Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon nanoparticles and will compare the
laboratory data to space- and ground-base astronomical data.
Strong laboratory experience is required. The project involves the use of a
Pulsed Discharge Nozzle Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer (PDN-CRDS) instrument
coupled to a Reflectron Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (RETOF-MS).
Experience with laser spectroscopy, jet expansions/molecular beams and
vacuum instrumentation is required for this project. Experience with
time-of-flight mass spectrometry is a plus.
A start date in late Fall 2007 - Winter 2008 is anticipated, pending NASA
funding of the program.
For more information, contact Dr. Farid Salama at 650-604-3384,
Farid.Salama en nasa.gov. Application deadline is November 1. Applications will
be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
