RESUMEN:
 
The start of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will open a new era in high
energy physics, as it will provide us with a unique chance to understand
the mass generation mechanism and investigate possible solutions of the
open issues in the Standard Model of the electroweak interactions.
In order to claim a discovery, however, it will be essential to
have reliable Monte Carlo generators describing new-physics signals as
well as backgrounds.
The talk will review the physics of multi-purpose event generators,
such as HERWIG or PYTHIA, which simulate parton showers in the
soft or collinear approximation of QCD and are provided with matrix-element
corrections to describe hard and large-angle radiation.
More recent tools, such as MC en NLO and matrix-element generators, will
be discussed, and their predictions will be compared with data on
jet events at the Tevatron accelerator.
