        Optical cooling of atoms and molecules

RESUMEN:
  
The basic concepts of optical cooling of atoms and molecules
are introduced, the experimental state of the art is reviewed,
and the open issues are discussed. In the outlook, I will discuss
laser cooling as a realization of quantum reservoir engineering,
and discuss analogous concepts applied to quantum state
preparation of the electromagnetic field in resonators.
