<pre wrap="">Electrons in strong magnetic fields and constrained to two dimensions give rise to stable plateaus in the transverse (Hall) resistance, a signature of the quantum Hall effect. This phenomenon was discovered in 1980 in low-temperature solid-state devices and it is now the basis of fundamental standards of electrical resistance world-wide. An exciting new 2D solid state system called graphene has the potential to expand the range of the standard far beyond the National Metrology Institutes. Some of the measurement and characterization methods developed to study this interesting physical system are presented in this talk, along with the ongoing developments in the study of graphene and its properties.

Dr. Rand Elmquist es Doctor en Física de la Universidad de Virginia,
EEUU, actualmente a cargo del Proyecto Ohm, de la
División de Metrología Eléctrica Cuántica, perteneciente al National
Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST, de Estados Unidos. Ha
realizado importantes contribuciones a la metrología fundamental
eléctrica, entre ellas el desarrollo de sistemas de comparadores
criogénicos de corriente para la escala de resistencia y actualmente
metrología cuántica basada en grafeno.<br>
