<b>Título</b>: Coding of olfactory information visualized by optical
imaging in the <i>Drosophila </i>antennal lobe <br>
<br>
<b>Abstract:</b><br>
The chemical senses taste and smell are evolutionarily the most
ancient animal senses. They are characterized by a multidimensional and
diverse stimulus space, that cannot be classified along any small set of
dimensions. Animals detect these odors with specialized olfactory sensory
neurons and cope with the problem of recognizing an extremely large
number of different odorants by programming a very large number of
functionally different olfactory neurons. Odors activate these neurons
and generate specific activity patterns which can be visualized by
optical recording methods. The olfactory information is further processed
before it is relayed to higher-order brain centers. The neural mechanisms
and plastic components that modulate and process the olfactory
information is the topic of my research: by profiting from genetic tools
that are available in the model organism <i>Drosophila melanogaster
</i>and linking it to neuronal physiological, molecular biological and
behavioral methods, we are investigating basic principles involved in
olfactory coding, processing and perception of odors.<br>
