Anomalous diabatic heating in the Tropics,
such as that associated with the El Niņo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), usually
triggers Rossby wave propagation into higher latitudes of both hemispheres. This
talk will explore ENSO-related perturbations of the
Tropical circulation and
Rossby wave propagation across the south Pacific. Particular attention will be
paid to effects on the climate of New Zealand, low frequency variability across
the far south Pacific, and connections to Antarctic sea-ice variability.
Possible interactions between ENSO forcing and the Southern Annular Mode will
also be touched on.
