Resumen

Ion assisted PVD is a powerful method for formation of thin surface layers
comprising phases which may be far out of the thermodynamic equilibrium.
However, deposition at elevated temperatures, annealing or prolonged
exposure to higher temperatures during their use will lead to additional
factors starting to influence the coatings. Here, a short overview is giving
on nanostructures formed by ion bombardment or thermodynamics or by a
combination of both factors. Diffusion processes starting from PVD are
normally not covered by conventional theory as non-equilibrium
concentrations and phases may be present. Additionally, several species may
be mobile or the phase composition and diffusivity could be highly
correlated. At the end, some examples of specific corrosion and
biocompatibility results of such surfaces are presented.
