The next generation of gravitational wave detectors, which will take
science data within less than five years, is expected to yield
unprecedented information on compact binaries involving neutron stars and
black holes. These detectors also have the possibility of constraining
asymmetries in rotating neutron stars, and with luck could detect
gravitational waves from a supernova in our galaxy. I will discuss the
science of gravitational waves and the astrophysical realm it is expected
to unveil.
