The structure of zonal jets in the atmosphere and oceans

Richard Scott, University of St Andrews

Resumen:

I will discuss some fundamental dynamical properties of atmospheric and
oceanic jets, addressing, in particular, three basic questions:

(i) what determines the separation between jets of a given speed?
(ii) what forcing conditions lead to the formation of strong jets?
(iii) under what conditions can jet formation occur independently of a
turbulent inverse cascade? Some applications to the winter stratosphere
will also be considered.
