Biomedical applications of biodegradable magnesium alloys
Prof. E. Aghion
Department of Materials Engineering, Ben-Gurion University, Beer-Sheva,
Israel
The concept of using magnesium as a biodegradable material is based on the
inherent properties of magnesium in terms of its adequate
biocompatibility, mechanical properties (close to human bone), cost
effective compared to regular biodegradable polymers and the fact that the
human body requires about 400 mg magnesium per day for normal functioning.
The aim of the presentation will be to introduce the use of biodegradable
magnesium alloys in applications such bone surgery fixation and as a solid
foam platform for controlled drug delivery that is obtained by powder
metallurgy technology. The presentation will be accompanied by relevant in
vitro and in vivo experiments. In addition a novel technology to produce
magnesium alloys with amorphous structure will be also introduced with the
aim to address the major problem of gas embolism that is generated due to
the corrosion of magnesium and subsequent hydrogen evolution.
