Job Opportunities
Experimental Nuclear Physics
Posted October 20, 2011
The Department of Physics at Central Michigan University invites applications for three tenure-track positions beginning August 2012 in experimental nuclear physics in areas of research related to the DoE-funded Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). These areas include experimental nuclear physics with a focus on exotic nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, beam/accelerator physics, and atomic, molecular and optical physics.
The Department expects to fill two of the positions at the Assistant Professor level and one at a more advanced level, all with competitive salaries and start-up packages. In addition, the positions include the possibility of up to five years of summer support from the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University.
CMU, a state-supported university with an on-campus enrollment of more than 21,000 students, is a doctoral research institution recognized for strong undergraduate education and a range of focused graduate programs and research. CMU’s close proximity to FRIB motivates this search, which is intended to attract outstanding scientists who will develop and maintain active, externally funded research programs and assume leading roles in the development of the FRIB, a national research priority.
The new faculty hires will also be expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and participate in university and departmental service activities. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field; must have post-doctoral research experience in one of the targeted research areas; must have teaching experience at least at the level of a graduate teaching assistant; and must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
Applicants should submit an application letter that includes a description of their experience in both teaching and research; a research statement that discusses their research plans and how these would include FRIB; a complete curriculum vita; and contact information for at least three references that includes email addresses and phone numbers. At least one of the references should be able to comment on the applicants’ teaching ability. Application materials must be submitted online atwww.jobs.cmich.edu<http://www.jobs.cmich.edu/>. To insure consideration, applications should be received by January 5, 2012, although review of applications will continue as needed until the position is filled.
For more information applicants should contact Prof. Joe Finck (finck en phy.cmich.edu<mailto:finck en phy.cmich.edu>) or Prof. Mihai Horoi (horoi en phy.cmich.edu<mailto:horoi en phy.cmich.edu>).
CMU, an AA/EO institution, strongly and actively strives to increase diversity within its community
