Hola: les recuerdo que el jueves 17 de Marzo a las 16 hs, en el aula E 24,
expondrá en el Coloquio del Departamento de Matemática el profesor Lev V.
Idels del Department of Mathematics University of Vancouver Island BC

Título: Mathematical Models of Marine Protected Areas.
Resumen: Marine protected and marine reserves areas (MPA) have been
promoted as conservation and fishery management tools to hedge marine life
and
sustain ecosystems. According to recent studies, MPAs extend age structure
of targeted species, sustain higher rate of reproduction, provide
insurance against management failure, restrict fishing mortality, and
allow habitat to recover. The reserve concept has recently attracted great
interest in the community of fisheries scientists and managers. One of the
benefits of a theoretical modeling of MPAs is insight into the type of
informative fisheries data that should be collected in order that the best
design can be established.
MPAs have been traditionally modeled using autonomous Ordinary
Differential Equations (ODE). To incorporate age-dependent population
structure and spatial effects, we introduce new MPA models via the system
of nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDE). A special technique
translates the system of PDE into the system of nonlinear Delay
Differential Equations(DDE).
In this talk we discuss complex dynamics of DDE models, with perennial
ecological favorites such as sign stability, global stability, persistence
and permanence, existence of regions of stability(instability). By
comparing the optimal harvesting rate against a constant harvesting rate,
it was demonstrated that the fast convergence to the optimal equilibrium
guarantees greater profits under the optimal harvesting strategy. We
compare our models of MPA with the existing set of models and indicate
open problems and further development of these models.
Están todos cordialmente invitados.
