La transparencia del pensamiento humano

 

 

A pressing issue in neuroscience with important theoretical and practical implications, is whether an objective manner can be established to assess awareness in absence of explicit reports.  Over the last decades, various technical developments - mainly derived from tools developed in physics- have made significant progress in this direction, establishing physiological markers of mental function. While in normal mental function these markers merely provide correlations, they become indicative of such functions when there is no other way to probe it. 

 During the first part of the seminar I will show how non-invasive neurophysiology can aid the understanding of the mind in two different cases in which simple inspection does not suffice: 1) Exploring consciousness in vegetative state patients, 2) Understanding consciousness in the developing mind of newborns. 

 In the second part of the course I will discuss the consequences of having a vast repository of human thought available in the web.
