Key studies have contributed to reveal the structure, composition and
possible functions of membrane raft domains in plants. By immunogold
labeling, we recently evidenced that lateral segregation of lipids
(polyphosphoinositide (4,5) bisphosphate) and proteins (REMORIN, the
first identified plant raft marker) found enriched in Detergent-Insoluble
Membranes (DIM), indeed exists at the nanoscale level in plant plasma
membrane (PM), making a strong correlation between DIM and rafts. « Omic
» analyses have revealed that a high proportion of proteins and lipids
associated with DIM may be involved in signalling pathways. Also our
recent data suggest that the PM lining plasmodesma (PD) may have similar
properties to rafts. Can rafts distribute between the different membrane
sub-domains? Quantitative proteomics reveals a dynamic association of
proteins to DIM upon elicitor signaling in tobacco cells. A role for plant
rafts as signal transduction platforms, similar to those documented for
mammalian cells, and in cell-to-cell communication through PD is starting
to emerge.
