"Methodology of Biosorption Investigations"

Over the past 25 years, intensifying research into metal biosorption
ellucidated the principles of this effective metal-concentration
phenomenon.
Biosorption can be very cost-effective particularly in environmental
applications where a low cost of the metal removal process is most
desirable. Some very efficient natural biosorbents have been identified,
and more are continuously reported upon, that require very little
modification in their preparation.
The pretreatment needs will also be discussed in this presentation.
Engineering scale-up of the biosorption process seems fairly
straightforward, based on experience from conventional sorption
operations.

Perhaps it is the interdisciplinary nature of biosorption investigations
may be at the root of many misconceptions in their conduct and result
reporting.
The fundamentals of single- and multimetal equilibrium as well as dynamic
flow-through sorption column studies are summarized in this presentation
that also points out the main scientific pitfalls.
