"The stellar and dark mass build-up of galaxies: downsizing vs upsizing "
Dr.Vladimir Avila- Reese
Instituto de Astronomía, UNAM
Aula del Edificio IAFE, 10:30hs.
Abstract:
A brief review on the emerging empirical picture of stellar mass (Ms)
assembling of galaxies will be presented. A semi-empirical model that
connects the Ms of observed galaxies at different redshifts with the
corresponding growing individual halo mass, Mh, will be outlined and used
to present an unified picture of the Ms and Mh assembling of galaxies as a
function of mass. This picture explains naturally the emergence of a
bimodality in color, star formation rate (SFR), and morphology for the
galaxy population, and it implies that the Ms build-up deviates
significantly from the dark halo growth (downsizing vs upsizing), both for
galaxies that today end much larger than Ms* (archaeological or population
downsizing) and much smaller than Ms* (downsizing in specific SFR) , where
Ms*~3x10^10 Msun. A review of current predictions of the popular LCDM
cosmological scenario will be presented, and compared with observations
and the mentioned semi-empirical picture. Both semi-analytical models and
N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of cosmic structure formation will be
discussed. As the result of the comparison, some open issues and
challenges in our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution will be
outlined.
" LCDM model at Galactic and Subgalactic Scales: Cosmology Meets Galactic
Astronomy "
Dr. Octavio Valenzuela
Instituto de Astronomía, UNAM
Aula del Edificio IAFE, 11:30hs.
Abstract:
I will present a general picture of the status of some cosmological
predictions at the scale of galaxies and below. I will pay some attention
to the state of widely discussed issues like the core/cusp in dark matter
halos as well as the substructure abundance. I will also discuss further
attempts to constraint the LCDM predictions at the scale of galaxies.
