Ecole sur les GRBs, 17-22 mai 2010, Cargese
The Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the most powerful explosions since the
formation of our Universe, are unique cosmic events. Lasting from a few
milliseconds to several minutes, they shine hundreds of times brighter
than a typical supernova, the ultimate end of a massive star, and about a
million trillion times as bright as the Sun. They are detected roughly
once per day from wholly random directions of the sky. It is now generally
accepted that the GRBs are induced by the core collapse of massive stars
or the merging of two compact objects (neutron star, black hole, ...). Due
to the extreme luminosity of their multi-wavelength emissions, they are
now considered as one of the best ways to probe the dawn of the universe.
The first international school dedicated this subject will be organized in
the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques, Cargese, Corsica, between the 17th
and 22th of May, 2010. It will aim at improving our knowledge of the
phenomena and at unveiling the nature of the early universe, while at
preparing the next generation observational programs. It will be widely
open to the scientific community, from both astronomical and high energy
communities. Course will be mainly based on large lectures (2 / 3 of the
time) in order to go deeply on a specific subject. The rest of the time
(1/ 3 of the time) will be open to all the participants for short
contributions (15 min).
Main lectures will be given by: R. Wijers, C. Guidorzi, C.-S. Yoon, B.
Zhang, F. Daigne, D. Bersier, N. Tanvir, S. Savaglio, H.-W. Chen, J.
Prochaska, K. Page, J. Grindlay and E. Pian
Registration will be open soon, please check the conference web page:
