Sol-gel mineral matrices for Cellular encapsulation
The encapsulation of biological species in inorganic gels is a promising alternative to natural or synthetic polymers encapsulation processes. Whereas the immobilization of biological molecules is already well-known, the encapsulation of cells still needs to be extended. The main difficulty lies in the development of matrices that permit a long term cells viability. In this context, the silica synthesis via an aqueous sol-gel pathway has been shown to be an effective rout for bacteria and diatom encapsulation. More recent developments indicate that this biocompatible encapsulation can be extended to other metal oxide matrices conferring on them new host properties.
