Abstract:
Victor Hess discovered in 1912 that the level of radiation increased
with the altitude in the atmosphere. He concluded that there was
radiation penetrating the atmosphere from outer space. These cosmic
rays are in fact particles with energies up to 10^21 eV. The shock
wave of supernova remnants in our galaxy is thought to be an
efficient accelerator for energies below 10^15 eV.
One of the key parameter in this mechanism of particle acceleration
is the density of the ambient medium where the supernova remnant
evolves. In a first part I will present a study of this density using
XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the historical supernova remnant SN
1006. Then I will discuss the consequences of our results on particle
acceleration and very high energy gamma ray observations.
