Subject: Ph.D. position in theoretical physics

We are looking for a PhD student to work in theoretical physics in the Department of Physics at
Umeå University. The position is a full-time position extending for four years. Opportunities for
part-time teaching may be offered. The position is planned to be filled before autumn 2007.

The student is expected to do analytical and numerical studies of the many-body physics of
ultracold atomic gases. Specifically, research interests include dynamics of Bose-Einstein
condensates, optical lattices and quantum phase transitions, currently focusing on problems such
as vortex dynamics and supersolidity. The theoretical research on cold atoms in Umeå is carried
out in close exchange with the experimental laser cooling group and in collaboration with several
international research groups. The choice of particular research project and method will depend
on the student’s interest and ability, as well as the current developments in this rapidly evolving
field of physics.

Prerequisites include 120 points (180 ECTS-credits) higher education studies, of which 60 points
(90 ECTS-credits) in physics. Applications should include description of past research
accomplishments, curriculum vitae, and names of references, all in 3 copies.
